How do I keep my laptop from overheating?

Question by Alyssa D: How do I keep my laptop from overheating?
Today, I bought a Dell laptop with a Dual Intel Processor and what not.

I’ve heard of laptops literally going on fire because of overheating. However, I use computers for long periods. How do I keep my laptop from overheating?

Buy a laptop cooler. Make sure the fan in the laptop is not blocked. And if your laptop gets VERY hot, turn it off and let it “rest.”

Make sure you set the laptop on a hard and flat surface when you are using it (like a desk). You don’t want any vents being blocked by blankets or your clothes if its on your lap. If you want to use it on your lap then get a cooling pad. If you are just using it for everyday tasks and use it on a flat surface then it should be fine. However, if you are gaming, or for some reason your laptop wasn’t designed properly and you notice it getting very hot, then get a cooling pad. Keeping your laptop cool can also help it last longer.

Also, if you are not doing any demanding tasks on your laptop you can set windows 7 power manager into power saver mode which will reduce the CPU usage a little and reduce the heat produced by the CPU.

Try turning it off & leaving it off for a few minutes. If the laptop feels cool and no air comes out of the vent, you’re saved.
