I am very happy with every aspect of this laptop. It fit my budget and had all the features of the more pricey laptops. I have not encountered any problems in any way with this unit. I would recommend this for anyone.
One last thing, I found out that Acer is owned by Sony :) I have always had nothing but great products from Sony, so this only adds to their great product line.

Great, except for monitor viewing angle and touch-pad buttons, February 4, 2010

Acer has too low a LCD viewing angle on this one at least. Put on a black image full screen, and you see a "rainbow" on the screen -- black is real black only on the rainbow and everywhere else it is gray. Tilt the screen a bit and red turns pale green. It does not both though under normal scenarios. I checked other laptops on the shop floor and they all have this effect more or less, usually much less though. It also seems that contrast-ratio of the Acer screen is very small.

Left and right clicks on the touch pad are too loud.

Great deal! No where else I find a laptop with 17.3" screen with 1600x900 resolution with Core i3 processor (instead of Dual Core or Core 2 Duo) and 4 GB RAM.

Processor speed, even though this is Core i3 and not Core i5 or i7, is just great. Windows experience index is 4.5 for Aero graphics but > 5 for everything else. It played Full HD AVCHD media full screen just fine with around 6% CPU load (even though this is integrated Intel graphics and not dedicated ATI or NVidia graphics card).

There were no dead pixels on the screen.

Touch-pad is multi-touch, which is really nice. This takes you more than half-way to having full touch-screen. I do not need touch-screen anymore given the cost premium!

It has glossy screen which is ideally not preferable but is in fashion these days. I do not like glossy screens as such but found this OK.

No flaws so far with anything. Keyboard keys are good as well. Wireless worked fine. All 4 USB ports, HDMI port, headphones port, DVD drive, all are working fine. Webcam is good as well. Only the costliest Logitech webcams do better than this. Speakers are better than my old laptop.

Only remaining thing to test are wired ethernet connection, burning DVDs, and battery life.

For all the good things people say about Windows 7, it still has the same issues as Vista or XP. I was trying to unplug an SD card and it says "some process is using the file" (windows issue, never tells which process).

Any new laptop will have built-in wireless, so you won’t need to purchase anything for the laptop. If you plan on connecting only to other wireless networks (at the local coffee shop, library, book store, etc.), then you don’t have to purchase or do anything at all. Just bring your laptop to where the wireless access is and start it up. Your laptop will automatically recognize the network and try to connect.

If, however, you want to set up a wireless network at home, then you’ll need to also buy a wireless router. I’d recommend a Linksys Wireless-G router, which will run you $ 50 to $ 60. Hook it up properly and you’ll also have wireless Internet at home. Assuming, of course, that you already have high speed Internet at home.

If you are buying a new laptop, it should have wifi built-in. So where ever wireless networks are available, you can have wireless Internet.

I am an IT person, and have used and tested many and many laptops. My Dell B130 works well as any other Dell I have had on the past (about 4) - However, I know its keyboard will fail within 1 year or so. The reason I know is that all my Dell laptops did. I still have an Inspiron 700m which I already replaced its keyboard twice in 3 years. The average is if you use the laptop daily, you will start having problems with your keyboard in about 1 year.

I am not saying that the rest of the computer is bad, but I believe Dell is making a lot of monye just selling keyboards for $25.00

GOOD TIP:
========
If you want to know if your laptop has a WEAK keyboard, just go to ebay and look for its keyboard... if you find MANY of them, it means that it has a weak keyboard and will fail some keys in 1 year or less. This tip works for any laptop.

I believe my next laptop will be a LENOVO.

Bought this Laptop in June 2006, and I am typing my review with it now.
Search around for best prices I paid $499 during one of Dell Days specials. It was reg. $859. I use this computer for surfing the net, emailing, and video editing.

the only thing I have experienced that is a problem is that my cat chewed on the charger cord, I ordered one off eBay, but dont waste your money... they fit at first but soon wear out FAST. you will see that the plastic ring is a different color and will not fit tight. I ended up splicing the original charger cord together and back in business!
The battery lasts for about 50 mins. but I dont have a need for that as I am always near a outlet.
No overheating at all. Quiet fan

NOTE: FOR FULL SYSTEM RESTORE HOLD " CONTROL + F11 KEY " AT BOOTUP.

I purchased this notebook so I could have something to sit around in the living room, coffee shop and/or occasional work trip. I am generally a MAC person, but this computer has worked pretty well for me, since I sometimes want to use a PC and my work uses PC's.

If you don't want an iPad, do want a "real" keyboard, but also think that netbooks are too small (especially the keyboard) and limited (smaller hard drive), then this is a good size. It's thin enough to slip in a back pack or carry on, and still enjoy a vivid screen, yet not so big as a 17 inch screen, that it should be considered a desktop.

Since I am a writer (at home and work), I like the "regular" sized keyboard, although the touch "mouse" pad is too close to the space bar that sometimes my thumb hits it and moves the cursor.

The computer boots up pretty quick, and if it sleeps or the battery looses power, it seems to restore it self pretty quickly, which I like very much.

Since I am a MAC person, there are several things I don't like about running MS products, including: OUTLOOK DID NOT COME WITH THE VERSION OF MS "OFFICE" THAT I BOUGHT (but then I just downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird and am just fine not paying more to MS thank you very much). It is especially annoying that Outlook does not come with the computer, since such a solid email/calendar program come standard with a MAC. Also, there are way more software notifications and "reminders" that constantly pop up that are annoying.

I do like the way Windows now organizes "Libraries" of "Documents," "Pictures," etc., very much like a MAC (no doubt, that's where MS got the idea).

My notebook had an HDMI output, which is great when you want to hook it up to a TV at home or at a hotel on a business trip, if your hotel has a HD tv with HDMI. This latter feature is great, since that means you can watch Netflix in your hotel room on the road.

The wifi works great. It was pretty easy to get it up and running for web surfing at home and in coffee shops.

There's more I like, but the size and functionality have been great: Not to big, not to small, great screen, plenty of HD space for general purposes, plenty of speed for skype etc., just very pleased.

Yes it really is that good, although they do cost a lot.

If you want a really good one then the new Alienware Allpowerful M17x laptop has just been anounced, that is the really good one.
It has a Core 2 Extreme Quad processor, 8GB DDR3 memory, and dual GTX280 gpu’s. That is the ulitmate in gaming notebooks.
